The History of Stubbings
How Stubbings Evolved Into a Leading Garden Centre in Maidenhead
Stubbings has a fascinating story. What began as a private estate has grown into a vibrant Garden Centre in Maidenhead, known for its heritage, horticulture, and community atmosphere. Here’s how it became what it is today.
A Home with a Royal and Scientific Past
Stubbings House has welcomed some remarkable residents. Sir Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester, played a major role in the American War of Independence and once lived here. During World War II, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands stayed at Stubbings after escaping the German invasion. She broadcast messages of hope to her people from the estate.
Later, from 1947 to 1969, the house belonged to Sir Thomas Merton. A physicist and radar expert, he converted the estate’s stables into the UK’s largest private laboratory. His work supported the war effort and left a lasting legacy.
A Family Estate Becomes a Parish
In 1825, Henry Skrine bought the property. His family, wealthy from tea plantations in Ceylon and Malaysia, expanded the estate and kept a quiet life. The Skrines even built a church on the land. Stubbings became a parish in 1874, and Herbert Henry Skrine served as vicar for over four decades.
The Modern Garden Centre Begins
In 1977, Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Good took over the estate. They began restoring and reimagining its purpose. The old walled gardens, once used for growing vegetables, were converted into the retail Garden Centre you see today. It specialises in mature, topiary, and rare plants.
A Café was later added, built on the site of a Victorian greenhouse. It quickly became a favourite local spot, especially for Afternoon Tea.
More Than Just a Garden Centre
Today, Stubbings offers much more than plants. Businesses now occupy restored parts of the estate, including the old laboratory. The venue also hosts creative workshops, seasonal markets, and the popular Summer Theatre series, featuring Shakespeare and opera performances.
From a historic private residence to a thriving hub for gardening enthusiasts, community events, and local business, Stubbings continues to evolve while staying true to its heritage. Visit us to experience how history and horticulture come together in the heart of Maidenhead.
