Walled Garden Cinema – ONE LIFE (12)

25th April 2024

Stubbings Walled Garden Cinema

This summer, we are back with some classic movies on the big screen, but we are doing things a little differently with four-nights of outdoor cinema in our Walled Garden.

Make the most of the longer evenings by joining us for a more intimate outdoor cinema experience. As usual, you can bring your chairs, beanbags or picnic blankets and curl up under the evening sky. However, this time, we are sorting out the food for you as every ticket includes a Stubbings jacket potato with a choice of fillings.  Snacks and drinks will be available to purchase throughout the evening in the Glasshouse Café including barista coffee, wine, beer, ice creams and popcorn.

We have listened to your feedback and we are also offering a rainy weather guarantee. This means that if it is forecast to rain heavily, we will postpone the screening and allow you to change to the new date or one of the other scheduled films if there is space. We will use the Met Office to help us decide if it is light or sustained heavy rain but we will try not to postpone if it is looking like a little passing drizzle.

Kicking off the Walled Garden Cinema, we have the 2023 critically acclaimed One Life (12), starring Helena Bonham Carter, Anthony Hopkins, Lena Olin and Jonathan Pryce. ONE LIFE tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, along with Trevor Chadwick and Doreen Warinner of the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia, rescued 669 children from the Nazis in the months leading up to World War II. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realised it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky (played by Anthony Hopkins) lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It’s not until a live BBC television show, ‘That’s Life!’, surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children – now adults – that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades.
